Today most of computers are connected together through the Internet (International network).
That means, that one can connect to information sources and send/receive data around the world.
Some of the jargon that belongs to these connections are TCP (Transfer Control Protocol) and IP (Internet Protocol).

Ones home computer is usually called client side and the service providers side is called server side. Service providers offer you e-mail and web browsing facilities (and some other services like home pages, if you ask/pay for them).
